7 Fun Ways to Spark Your Creative Side

Did you know? May 30th is National Creativity Day!

This is truly a day to celebrate. I mean a day dedicated to being creative, how fun!

For us bloggers, influencers, shop owners, writers, artists, (and so much more), being creative runs in our blood. You were just born with it, baby.

But whether you are here because creativity doesn’t always come to you naturally, or you are just in a slump, here are 7 super fun ways to spark your creative side.

Art, Painting, Drawing, Etc

IMG_1667.jpg

You do not need to be an artist or ‘good’ at drawing to take part in this. We can all have a little fun with a pen or a paintbrush!

There are SO many ways to dabble in art. You could doodle in a notebook, color in a coloring book, use stencils, draw a cartoon, etc.

Tik Tok or Pinterest are both hot spots for art ideas. Within the past month I created both of these canvas from Tik Toks I have seen.

The idea for the one on the left is to place a black and white picture in the center, and then paint around it. The white lines are supposed to act as sun rays, I believe, but obviously I was a little off. See? Not perfect! I even added a little personal style with the washi tape.

The canvas on the right was also a Tik Tok idea where you drizzle different colored paint onto a canvas, and then literally just toss it in the air (outside, please!) and it will create this!

Psst. Check out my IGTV video on National Creativity Day to see video How-To’s!

Collages

Collages are super fun and make really pretty wall art! The picture below is only one way to make collages.

Here is how I did it:

  1. Buy canvases! I bought a pack of eight 10x10 canvas from Michaels.

  2. Pick out your pictures; magazines, family photos, Pinterest, etc

  3. Print pictures; I ordered mine from Shutterfly because my printer wasn’t working. I found that 5x7 worked best and I just cut them.

  4. Pre-arrange your pictures. I did this in Canva but you can also do this after the pictures are printed.

  5. Glue, and hang!

You can also glue the pictures directly to the wall, or in however style you want! Also, did you know that you can buy a collage kit? If you want an aesthetically pleasing collage wall but, lets face it, don’t have the patience, you can still have it!

Bullet Journaling

Ya’ll already KNOW I’m all about this. If you are looking for a new activity to adhere to your creative mind, look no further. The reason why a bullet journal is the best creative activity is because there are no rules! You want a minimalistic design with only black and white spreads? Amazing! You want the whole page to be covered in colorful washi tape? Wonderful!

Not only will a bullet journal satisfy your creative craving, but it will also help you stay organized for the rest of your life.

Remodel/ReDecorating

One of the most time consuming (yet rewarding) ways to get creative is to tackle the remodel of a room in your house (or the entire house, eek!). One of the most popular rooms to redecorate is the bedroom. For obvious reasons, its nice to update this space every once in awhile.

Why is this creative? Because you are working with a clean slate. A blank canvas, if you will.

I am in no way an expert in this area, but I did redo my entire bedroom during quarantine!

Here are a few things I would recommend from my mistakes (oops):

  • Really plan out your colors well. Before you put them on the wall make sure they are light/dark enough for what you are looking for

  • Vacuum every inch of the room, including the walls and ceiling

  • Remove any tape from the walls and cover up any holes. Don’t slather on the spackling paste too thick or it wont work and will be really hard to sand flat

  • If the color of your walls was previously really dark, use a primer first

  • When using a roller…use the long handle that comes with it. Will save so much time

  • Take breaks

  • Unless you don’t care about paint smudges on your ceiling, be very diligent about masking tape

  • Always have a window open or fan on, otherwise you will get a headache from the paint fumes

Lastly, have fun! Don’t rush with the decorating and take time to pick out some new pieces for your room. You probably won’t be redecorating again for a little while, so make sure you are happy with everything!

Photoshoots

Grab a camera, a cool background, maybe a few props, a smile, and get on out there chica. (Friends are optional, sometimes they come in handy).

This can be super fun whether you are a blogger or not! Don’t think you necessarily need a ‘reason’ to take pictures. It might feel weird at first to take pictures…just to take pictures but you’d be surprised at how it will get the gears grinding in your brain.

Like this idea but don’t know where to start? Here are a few tips:

  • I give to you the holy grail of all things creative: Pinterest. Go through your favorite photos and I guarantee you’ll find inspiration.

  • Recreate your favorite influencers and bloggers posts on Instagram!

  • Tik Tok. Enough said. (Thats how I found out about the mirror idea!)

Also PS. You don’t need to go outside or have any fancy equipment to have a fun and successful photo shoot! Here are some I recently did that did not cost me a dime and I didn’t even have to leave the house. (Actually, I did have to buy a white shower curtain because the butterfly one was see through, also yes I had a photoshoot in my bathroom).

Cooking

This has become my absolute new favorite hobby. Food is literally life, so why not have some fun with it? If you have the time, break free from microwavable meals and get your hands dirty! Also, if you are looking to live a healthier lifestyle then cooking will become your best friend.

I totally understand that we don’t always have the time to cook every meal, but it’s good for the body and soul to do your own cooking sometimes.

Here are some recipes I’m loving recently:

Sugar Free Pecan Pie

Garlic Butter Chicken with Spinach and Bacon

Low Carb Zucchini Pizzas

Another idea is to find local cooking classes in your area!

Writing

Ok, so not all of us are fond of writing. But, there is a whole genre of it called ‘creative writing’ so thats gotta mean something! For a lot of us, writing is a creative outlet. Even this blog post is considered ‘creative’ writing.

Try it sometime, grab even a single piece of paper and just…start writing. Don’t think about it too much, the words will flow. Promise.

I mean think about it. Poetry, fiction, songwriting, tv scripts, blog posts. Those are all creative works. Even journaling about your day can satisfy those creative cravings!

Don’t knock it until you try it!

So, do you feel creatively fulfilled yet? I hope so! Have fun!
